What the Claude Shutdown Should Teach Every Small Business Owner About AI Risk
Eighteen days.
That is how long one of the most powerful AI tools in the world went completely dark for businesses everywhere, with zero warning. No email. No heads up. No grace period to pull your work somewhere else. One day it worked. The next day it did not.
If you run your business on AI in any way, and at this point most of us do, this should get your attention. Not because AI is unreliable because the way most of us are using it right now leaves us exposed in a way we would never accept from any other part of our business.

What Actually Happened
In mid-June, the U.S. Commerce Department ordered Anthropic, the company behind Claude, to shut down its two most powerful AI models for any foreign national anywhere in the world because there was no way to selectively block access, Anthropic shut the models down for everyone. Companies in finance, healthcare, real estate, and small business alike watched their AI go silent overnight.
Eighteen days later, access came back, but for those eighteen days, any business that had built a workflow around that single tool was stuck.
This was not a hack. It was not a bug. It was a policy decision made in Washington that had nothing to do with the businesses affected by it, and everything to do with the fact that most of us do not think about AI the way we think about other critical parts of our operations.
Why This Matters Even If You Do Not Use Claude
Here is the part I want you to sit with. This was not really a story about one company or one model. It was a preview of what happens any time a business builds its operations on a single point of failure it does not control.
Ask yourself honestly. If the one AI tool you rely on most disappeared tomorrow, would your business keep moving, or would it stall?
If you write your marketing copy in one AI tool, manage your customer follow up in another automation platform, and lean on a single chatbot to answer client questions, you have built real efficiency. You have also built real risk. A government order, a service outage, a pricing change, or a company shutting down a product line can all do the exact same thing to your business that this export control order did to companies using Claude.

The Businesses That Barely Felt It
The interesting part of this story is not the shutdown. It is who came through it fine.
The businesses that barely noticed were not the biggest or the most technical. They were the ones that had already built a little flexibility into how they use AI. They were not married to one tool. They understood their AI supported their work, and their work did not depend entirely on it.
That is the whole lesson. You do not need six different AI subscriptions or a computer science degree to protect yourself. You need to know where your dependency actually lives, and you need a plan for what happens if that one thing goes away.
A Ten Minute AI Resilience Check
You can do this today, and it will tell you exactly where you stand.
List every task in your business that currently runs through one specific AI tool. Content, customer service, scheduling, follow up, anything.
For each one, ask what you would do tomorrow morning if that tool stopped working with no warning.
If your honest answer is "I have no idea," that task is a risk point. Write it down.
Pick your single biggest risk point and spend ten minutes researching one backup option. You do not need to buy it or set it up today. You just need to know it exists.
That is it. Ten minutes, and you have already done more to protect your business than most companies did before this shutdown happened.

Building AI Into Your Business the Right Way
This is exactly why I never teach AI as a single tool problem. I teach it as a way of thinking about your business. The tools will keep changing. New models will launch, prices will shift, and yes, tools will occasionally go dark without warning. What does not change is a business owner who understands how to evaluate a tool, use it well, and build in enough flexibility that no single outage can take them down.
That is the difference between a business that survives a disruption like this without missing a beat, and one that spends eighteen days scrambling.
If you want help thinking through where your business is exposed and how to build real flexibility into your AI setup, that is exactly what I walk business owners through inside my training and consulting work.
