Reddit Lost 86% of Its Visibility in ChatGPT Overnight. Your Business Could Be Next.

August 31, 20264 min read

For years, if you asked ChatGPT what real people thought about a product, a service, or pretty much anything, there was a good chance it would point you to Reddit. Reddit showed up constantly as a source inside AI answers.

Then OpenAI changed how its search works, and Reddit's citations inside ChatGPT dropped 86% in a single month. No warning. No appeal process. One update, and one of the biggest sites on the internet nearly disappeared from AI answers.

If a site with 100 million daily users can get humbled by a single algorithm change, it is worth asking what that means for a small business that has spent years building visibility the old way.

What Actually Happened

This is not a Reddit problem specifically. It is a preview of something every business owner needs to understand.

For the past two decades, visibility online has mostly meant one thing: rank well on Google. You optimized your website, built backlinks, and tried to land on page one. That game had rules everyone more or less understood.

AI search does not play by those rules. When someone asks ChatGPT, Claude, or another AI tool a question, the AI decides which sources to pull from and which ones to mention. There is no page one to fight for. There is just whatever the algorithm decides is worth citing that day, and that decision can change overnight with zero notice.

Reddit found that out the hard way. It will not be the last site this happens to.

Why This Matters More Than It Sounds Like It Does

Here is the shift most business owners have not clocked yet. More people are skipping search engines entirely and asking AI tools directly. Instead of typing a question into Google and scrolling through ten blue links, they are asking ChatGPT or Claude and taking the answer they get.

That means the businesses AI chooses to mention are the ones getting found. The ones it does not mention might as well not exist in that conversation, no matter how good the business actually is.

And unlike traditional SEO, where a bad month usually meant a slow decline, this new kind of visibility can vanish in a single update. Reddit did not do anything wrong. It just wasn't chosen anymore.

This is a completely different game than the one most small business owners have spent years learning, and most agencies are not paying attention to it yet.

What This Means For Your Business

Here is the part that should actually make you feel better, not worse.

The audience you own cannot be taken away by a config change at OpenAI. Your email list. Your phone contacts. Your community. The people who already know, like, and trust you. None of that lives inside someone else's algorithm, and none of it can disappear overnight because a company changed how its search works.

That does not mean you ignore AI visibility. It means you treat it the way it deserves to be treated: as one more channel to build intentionally, not the only place you exist.

This is exactly what AEO, answer engine optimization, is about. It is the practice of structuring your content so AI tools are more likely to find it, understand it, and cite it when someone asks a relevant question. It is a real, specific skill set, and right now, almost nobody offering marketing services locally is doing it.

What To Do About It This Week

You do not need to overhaul your entire online presence. Start with these.

- Keep building your owned audience first. Your email list and your community are the foundation nothing else can touch.

- Write content that answers real questions clearly, the way you would explain something to a person, not the way you would stuff keywords into a page for a search engine.

- Pay attention to whether AI tools are mentioning your business at all right now. If you do not know, that is worth finding out.

The businesses that get ahead of this are not the ones panicking every time a platform changes its rules. They are the ones who understand the shift early enough to build around it instead of getting caught off guard by it.

That is exactly what I help business owners do, both inside the Surfside AI Collective, where we break down changes like this one every week, and through Surfside Answer Advantage, where I help businesses actually get found inside the AI tools their customers are already using.

If you want to stay ahead of shifts like this instead of finding out about them after your visibility has already dropped, come join us.
